Richard Wilhelm’s translation of the I Ching (or Book of Changes) is the definitive English-language standard. First published in 1950, this foundational German-to-English translation was rendered by Cary F. Baynes, with a famous foreword by Carl Jung that introduced the ancient text to Western psychology.
Wilhelm, a German missionary and sinologist, lived in China for over a decade. With the help of the Chinese scholar Lao Nai-hsüan, Wilhelm's translation went beyond a simple literal conversion. It frames the I Ching as a profound philosophical guide to the Chinese worldview, Taoism, and Confucianism, integrating ancient commentaries and practical divinatory methods.
